CB, Stereo and Auxilliary Switch Panel Refit
Monday, January 25th, 2010
I got the MudStuff dash back in today, along with the modified Carling Tech switches and the CB and stereo in their new positions. The CB is wired up except for the antenna, which has been left hanging out of the front of the dash alongside the unit together with a small cable to connect the SWR meter for antenna calibration. Once the calibration is complete, the CB unit will slide all the way into its mounting slot and be flush fitted.
The auxiliary switches are all connected and running as well as before, but the lighting is improved. As promised yesterday, I have included a shot taken at dusk to better show their illumination. Sorry about the quality of the photo – the camera didn’t like the dusk conditions with the flash inhibited.
While the panel was out, I took the opportunity to run a feed from the switched main battery bus (only live when the ignition switch is moved out of the “0″ position and powers aux instruments, rear wash-wipe and so on) into the engine bay. This will control a new relay in one of the spare slots of the relay mounting bank to provide power to the Bosch fuel filter heater, part of Land Rover’s Arctic spec, I bought years ago (but removed when I fitted the SVO heat exchanger). Since that heat exchanger is no longer used (following the trouble in the Alps and the hike in SVO prices), I will refit the electrical filter heater. This will receive its power from the ignition switched relay (so cannot be powered with the ignition off), but that feed will run through the thermostatic switch that fits into one of the filter housing’s blanked ports. This will only activate the heater when temperatures get very low, saving power wastage when ambient temperatures are more normal for the UK. Though I didn’t suffer any running problems in the recent cold snap, it makes sense to use this heater as it will otherwise just be laying in a parts box and could be of benefit in future winters because the UK doesn’t use winter diesel.
