Nick's Land Rover - Series III Rebuild

Range Rover Update

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I spent today tightening the wheel bearings, checking the steering and replacing the front prop shaft UJs in an effort to eliminate a front end transmission vibration that starts at 68mph.  This was present before I replace the CV joints, but has been slowly worsening.  It’s much better now, but not quite gone.  I have a suspicion that it may be the front diff.

Oh dear.. that vibration at a certain speed sounds horribly familiar. Time I had a closer look at my truck!

I hope I’m not stating the obvious, but you have checked the tyres and the weights on the rims haven’t you?

I also hope to not be stating the obvious, but sounds like it might be the tracking, if it’s not the ballancing. Is there any steering wobble or vibration? My S1 actually gave me tennis elbow before a mate who’s a tyre fitter sorted the tracking for me. Laser tracking can be acurate down to 1/8th mm. It makes all the differance having the truck spot on.

Hopefully, you might be right Paul. I do have pronounced outside shoulder wear (even on both tyres), whilst the inner shoulders and centres seem fine. The front tyre wear overall is twice the rate of the rear.
