Intake Duct Routing/Snorkel

I had the complete left wing (with its original outer still fitted) on the vehicle today in order to accurately set the required position for the air cleaner and to play around with a few snorkel ducting routes.

I had contemplated several air cleaner and snorkel options, including fitting a 300Tdi unit on the rhs of the engine and running an air pipe over the top of the engine, and using the 300 air cleaner mounted on the roof rack behind the left hand spots.

I fiddled around for a while and decided that the 12J air cleaner is going back in its previous position, though the intake will now point directly aft instaed of parallel to the rad as before. By sitting it a fraction lower than before, I was able to run the intake ducting straight back and through the left steering box mount to the front of the nearside footwell. From here it will connect to a 200Tdi wing intake assembly . This will give me a water tight intake system. By cutting away the forward top corner of the lhs steering box mount, I’ll be able to tidy up the flxible ducting considerably.

This has saved me from having a wing top intake and having to remove or cut the Def heater intake duct, or from having a filter and duct ssytem on the rhs, crossing the engine and taking up space inside the rhs of the bay where I plan to fit the battery.

I’ll be using a 200Tdi Safari Snorkel, which fits the left intake as decided on, and will give better clearance from the roof rack braces either side of the windscreen and the the rack light assembly.  The Safari Snorkel is plastic, so will never have rust problems, and use of the ram top should marginally improve engine breathing in normal conditions, with the use of a centrifugal “mushroom” top for dust or wet environments.
