90 Update Nov 13

Nothing exciting, but a  couple of little updates.

The 90 was given its 36,000 mile service and it has quietened but not cured the noise from the rear diff – with the oil warmed up, there is still a small knock from the diff with every full wheel rotation, which has been suggested as a high spot on the crown wheel and not likely to be a significant issue.  Otherwise, all was well.

It had its MoT today with a clean pass and no advisories, and I have just arranged a new insurance policy for less than the current policy premium and allowing me to fit the snorkel too, which was in fact bought before the vehicle itself because Helena is quite keen on the look of a 90 with a Safari snorkel.  So, that’ll be a photo accompanied update for late December or January.  I have thrown a bottle of Wurth diesel fuel system cleaner into the tank on the way back from the MoT to clean the injectors up.

I also had to fix a blown centre dash bulb (for the heater controls) and a bad rear door courtesy light/alarm switch.  The bulb was pretty simple: undo the two torx bit screws on the panel and then carefully prise the trim panel forwards, starting at the bottom and using a wide lever that spreads the load and won’t mark the dash.  Then pull off the heater control knob if in the way and press the grey plastic bulb holder back inside the dash, fishing it out into the open by its wiring to allow the bulb to be replaced.  Reassembly is simply the reverse procedure.  As for the rear door switch, that was even easier: undo the single screw and pull the switch and wire out of the drilled hole, clean up the copper contacts with a wire brush, spray with WD40 and refit.  It’s nice to repair two faults in under ten minutes at no more than the cost of a small bulb and a spray of oil!
