Engine Leak/Gearbox

I took the 109 out on a few miles’ test run again yesterday to check the work undertaken before refitting the whole floor – the driver’s side floor panel was laid in loose, but the tunnel cover and passenger floor were left out just in case there was still a fault. It’s amazing how noisy these vehicles are without the floor panels fitted!

The test runs went well, with no signs of any movement on the stick, never mind jumping out, under any conditions. The 3rd and 4th gear changes seem more positive, too. There was a small amount of dirty engine oil around where the leaks had previously been seen, but this appears to be oil spilled during refilling that has run along the head and down the left side of the block and flywheel housing. I hosed it off, and the second, longer test run only produced a very small amount of oil in the same place, apparently just running off as the engine warms up. It may take a few washes to fully clear this oil, but at least I know it’s not a leak. Having filled the oil level to the “MIN” mark, it has stayed perfectly level after both runs without any top-ups. I’m tentatively optimistic that both faults have been cured.

The cab floor has been refitted, the matting and seats re-installed and the vehicle returned to normal working condition.
