LaSalle Headlining Review

LaSalle make fibre-glass head linings for most Series and Defender models.  They also make other trim panels to replace existing panels or to fit to basic models lacking genuine trim options.  I have only used this one product and have never seen any of the others in the range, so this review is very specific and can’t be used to assess their other products.

The headlining is available in several colours.  I chose grey, which has a rough grain texture with a light grey back ground and pale grey/white and dark small flecking.  It’s a very smart and durable finish which is 100% waterproof and non-absorbent.  The texture will collect marks if contact is made with dirty objects, but the dirt washes off easily with a damp cloth or, for oily marks, a white-spirit moistened cloth.  Try to use a lint-free cloth like a cotton shirt or sheet remnant.

The lining comes flat packed in sections – one for a truck cab, two for an 88 and three for a 109.  Surrounds for Alpine Light apertures are an optional extra.  I found one small scuff in the face of a panel where they had rubbed in transit.  There was some protection between panels to avoid this, so perhaps I was just unlucky.  However, the damage was limited and small and is really only apparent to the critical eye.

Fitting as per the instructions is straight forward if you have a plain roof, though I’d advise gluing camping roll-mat to the roof panels first to prevent drumming and condensation. I’d also recommend using draught excluder tape around the gutter trim to prevent rubbing and creaking.   If you have alpine lights, though, you’re in for a frustrating day while you try to mark out the positions and shapes to cut the affected head lining panel.  It’s not just a matter of marking the cut-outs in the roof onto the lining, either; there are no templates for the holes you need to cut and the shape of the surrounds is a little more complex than it appears, needing a lot of trial fitting and trimming.  The results are worthwhile, though.
