I have fitted the new SIII mudshield and steering box guard under the drivers side wing. I have a new SII mudshield for the passenger side – it is flat (as opposed to the SIII’s cranked shape), which allows easier modification to fit around the Defender heater intake duct. I used a large sheet of card, initially cut to the exact shape of the new mudshield, to make up a template in the vehicle. With gradual trimming, I managed to get a very close fit, leaving 2-5mm clearance around the heater duct. This cut-line has been transferred to the mudshield. Once fitted, a 1″ wide square cornered U-channel will be needed to fit the bottom edge of the mudshield to the footwell (the wing intake ducting for the engine and snorkel prevents the mudshield from mating directly with the footwell). The clearance between the heater duct and mudshield will be filled with strips of adhesive neoprene.
I have also started flatting back the paintwork to get rid of the orange-peel and runs. I’m using 1500 and 2000 grit, and have bought a machine polisher and compound to bring up a mirror shine. Once that’s done, I’ll be able to fit the rear lights, badge and hardtop windows.
