Roof Storage

I have completed the roof rack storage system.  It is a very simple system of 12mm marine ply boards bolted to the roof rack, with a Hannibal 1.2m roof top tent cover stapled around all the edges.  This gives me a weather proof bag in which to load any external equipment or bags, and prevents any loose articles coming off or falling between the rack bars.

The cover has a zip running around three sides (left, right and rear) with two zippers (? – the moving bits), so opening it fully is easy.  It also already had to external sleeves for additional securing, to which I have added a pair of ratchet straps.  The bag folds down flat when empty, and is being held down with bungees to prevent it flapping in the wind.

I was initially going to mount the assembly at the back end, but decided the moving it a couple of feet forward would give better weight distribution, allow me to stand on the back of the rack for unzipping and loading, and would also allow the carriage of some small external loads if required (like Jerry cans).

It cost me a grand total of £35 – £20 for the ply board, and £15 for the straps and fixings.  I was lucky enough to aquire the new cover for free.
