I removed the speedo for interior painting. As I mentioned earlier, the lighting at night was significantly dimmer and bluer than the 3-in-1 cluster adjacent to it, much like the oil pressure gauge. The green bulbs lit the other instruments well, including the oil pressure gauge after its interior was repainted white, but the speedo was now barely illuminated.
The speedo was removed easily enough – the steering wheel and column top shroud were removed and the instrument panel withdrawn. Disconnecting the speedo drive cable is always a bit fiddly, but other than that, it was simple to undo the two securing clamps and remove the three warning bulbs at the bottom, the illumoination bulb and the odometer cable.
The innards were removed by taking off the bezel, glass and rim, undoing the two pozidrive screws either side of the cable fitting. The interior of the casing was repainted white, and the thin dusting of a coat on the back of the instrument’s face was given a proper layer. I’m just waiting for the paint to dry before re-assembling and refitting.
