I have finished the fourth hub, spacer and wheel. I haven’t bothered with too many pictures as it was an identical job to yesterday’s front wheel work, including fitting the other new stub axle and bleeding the brakes (minus the three hour delay). The inside of the drum needed cleaning up with an emery cloth – water had gotten in and stood, rusting a sizeable part of the brake surface (perfectly serviceable now). In all, it took me two and a half hours, so it was done by midday.
The final two wheels (both spares) have been washed and are awaiting a rub down and repaint in the garage. I’ll do a bit on them tonight.
I’ll try to finish the left mudshield tomorrow. The bottom edge needs bolting to the footwell and a section of the original mudshield’s top section needs fastening to the top of this SII panel just inboard of the Defender heater intake duct in order to cover the longer apperture of the SIII inner wing and wing top. It simply needs a couple of rows of rivets to hold it to the overlapping area of the SII mudshield. The bend in the panel is to clear the engine intake ducting from the snorkel.
Using the farm jack (JackAll) and wheel chocks to do the front wheel/hub today got me thinking about where to store them in the vehicle. I intend to stow the farm jack internally to prevent theft and corrosion. It’ll be fitted with the original mounting kit on the tub’s right hand wheel box, just ahead of the rear tank filler neck cover and outboard of both rear seats. I was considered fitting the galvanised chocks in their carriage brackets under the second row seats (there would be ample space), but came up with a better idea. I checked the brackets size and found the perfect place to carry them. The chocks will be easily removeable sideways from the location with minimal loss of storage space. Better still, I won’t have to stow muddy chocks from offraod use (they have a lip on their front edge that digs into the ground for use when winching another vehicle out) inside the vehicle.
