Well, the dent has been repaired faultlessly, with the two complete panels being resprayed  It was done by our local “Chips Away” in a few hours, and they have done a great job.  I also had them spray up a pair of new windscreen to bulkhead clamps, having primed them thoroughly in the hollow rears my self, as one of the original clamps had already succumbed to the typical corrosion they suffer.

I have also had the whole underside and the bulkhead and door voids waxoiled professionally by Rustmaster in Hatfield. Â The waxoil that Micheal uses is very different from the shop-bought stuff most of us are familiar with – it has much better inhibitors in it and dries much tougher than the shop stuff. Â It dries more like thin asphalt, fairly hard but not brittle and very resistant to abrasion. Â It seems really strong stuff, so I expect it to last well. Â The shock was the condition of the underside of the 90. Â It had looked pretty respectable, with just a little light surface rust here and there, but once all the road grime and small amounts of oil and grease had been removed by a very thorough steam lancing, it was clear that about 20% of the aft chassis and 50% of the rear axle were covered by thin surface rust. Â It really does pay to get the treatment done at a very early stage. Â I also cleaned up a tinge of surface rust around a couple of the outermost bolt holes in the rear cross member and treated them with Kurust before rubbing down and respraying the whole cross member face – it’s outrageous how thin the factory paint is there and shows well why five year old Defenders normally have complete rust coverage of the cross member – rubbing with the scotch pad just to provide a key went straight through the paint to bare metal in a single pass of the pad!
Ad for the snorkel, I’m now trying to find a sensible insurance company who will allow it to be installed without charging silly money – Tesco gave us a good policy and cheap premium, but won’t allow the snorkel to be fitted at all, and the insurance companies I have tried who will accept it want between two and three hundred pounds a year more than we are paying now. Â It’s ridiculous that insurers will refuse cover for the fitting of an accessory on the grounds that it is a modification, even when they concede that if it had been factory fitted off the first buyer’s options list, it would have been accepted at no extra cost!
The pictures show the result of the steam cleaning and the last photo shows the waxoiling partly done – everything underneath other than the engine, gear boxes, exhaust and prop shafts was done. Wet waxoil doesn’t photograph at all well – it’s much smoother and duller now.

Hi Nick,
I’m glad the dents have been sorted and you’ve had the waxoiling done. I think its bizarre that Land Rover only put a thin coat of paint on the undersides of their vehicles considering the uses they can be put to. I must get the Td5 re-done this year, the rust is beginning to appear at the back again.
Good luck finding a ‘sensible’ insurance company, I feel your pain! Just because we fit a ‘raised air intake’ doesn’t mean we are going to plow through screen deep mud and water. Well not often anyway! I’m insured through Sureterm, not too bad on price considering all the modifications on my Defender, but it does put you onto a limited mileage policy.
Best of luck in your hunt mate.
Regards,
It’s just their callus attitude towards their customers, as further witnessed by the crooked wings and light trims. I had a look at a few more new Defenders on forecourts this week and they had exactly the same fault; sloping wings with the right wing being worst, exaggerated by the trims and the rhs trim top being clear from behind the GRP grille panel while the lhs is tucked in behind. LR just don’t give a stuff about Defenders, seeming to be embarrassed by them. I have honestly come to believe they want to alienate enough customers that they can justify killing the model off and just concentrate on the bling models.
I tried all the big and small 4wd insurers with the same results. They all wanted between £500 and £650, the cheapest and also least restrictive being Flux at £505. That’s £160 more than we pay now!
Nick
Hi Nick,
That does seem a bit steep. Just checked and I only payed £358 for fully comp on my Td5 last year. I am on an 8000 mile limit but they haven’t asked for a mileage update for a few years. Granted the vehicle is a bit older than yours, (ten years old this year), but its got far more mods than just a snorkel, and its still got an agreed value of more than I bought it for.
I’m going to have to sort my droopy wing, as since I parked infront of your TDCI after you had re-aligned yours I’m taking more notice of the sad doe-eyed look my Defender gives me.
I should pick up the new project on the 14th, look forwards to getting it home.
Regards,
