I did a little job that has been waiting since shortly after the strip-down, namely replacing the wing mirror glass which had developed a 2mm spot of corrosion, and fitting the (Scorpion Racing) wing mirror heating kit.
Today was the first time I have opened the kit, and I was a little disappointed to say the least. No relay or pre made wiring system – just the pads, a few cheap terminals, a 3m length of black domestic 2-core cable and the ugliest switch they could find. The pads are fine, it’s the rest that is poor quality, especially considering the price and Scorpion’s posturing.
Stripping the mirrors is easiest if you run hot water over the mirror head edge seals to soften them. Once they were off, I gave the units a good clean out and then dried them.
The self adhesive pads were fitted to the cleaned mirror backs. Holes were drilled in the head units to fit the cable. This was drilled on the inboard side of each unit.
I cut the wire into 2 equal lengths as the pads will be powered from a relay under the centre of the dash (Defender fuse box and relay panel). I won’t be using the switch provided, running the mirrors in the same circuit as the rear windscreen heat.
The units were then reassembled. The wire will be tucked up under the arm when fitted and secured.
I have also replaced the broken glass in the Range Rover Classic rear view mirror that is to be used on the 109. This will provide a bigger mirror that is less prone to high vibration and also has underside map lights.

Hi Paul,
I replaced the mirror glass by taping the face up (to prevent splinters or shards and to retain the shape of the broken glass) and then removed the clip-in front lip of the casing before removing the glass. I can’t remember now how it was secured – this was done 13-14 years ago now! But the replacement was cut at a glazier from regular mirror glass and refitted.
You may well find second hand complete mirror assemblies on forums, Facebook groups, eBay and at the second hand parts stands on the big shows, which might save a bit of fiddling about. That’s how I hot the autodimming version to upgrade my RRC and use this one with the flip-dim from my RR in the 109.
