Side Protection

I have bitten the bullet and ordered today a pair of Mill Services rock-sliders. These not only provide a full length jacking point, but should provide ample protection from jerryatric and female drivers in the super-market carpark, preventing their doors from damaging the new paintwork.

They attach (bolted, not welded) to the bulkhead outrigger, front of tub outrigger and rear spring hanger outrigger, and are rated for lifting the vehicle. Mine need to be of custom length to fit between the 110 wheelarches, but this costs no extra. Mill seem very helpful, and reckon I’ll get them within 2 weeks (I’ll keep you posted). Seems like good value for £115 incl. so far.

I have included pictures of the rear sections of the original sills which show where the jerrycan holder frames fitted. The sills did not need any cutting – just a few holes drilling for the frame bolts. The frames can be seen from both sides in the other picture. The lower lip that overlapped the sill will need to be ground off and the bottom 3/4″ (roughly) of the locker doors removed in order to fit above the proud sliders, but there should be no other issues, allowing me to retain full use of the lockers with the sliders fitted.

  1. DO you know anythin about Mill services ?

I have been trying to source a pair of jackable sills for my 88 with no reply.

  2. Hi Feder,

Mill Services are the company I bought my sills from. The quality is excellent, and they were extremely good value. Yo my knowledge, they’re the only manufacturer of sill bars for Series Land Rovers.

  3. Hi Nick,

I’m studying the subject of rocksliders/jackable sills for my Series III V8. Google let me – though various forums – to your excellent weblog.

In this particular entry (from quite a while ago 🙂 ) you mention ordering jackable sills from mill services. I have searched through the rest of your weblog, but couldn’t find any pictures detailing how these sills look like on your car. Did I miss anything?

I’m especially interested to see how these sills are to be mounted to the car as I’m considering building my own sills (transportation costs of these sills from the UK or the US to the Netherlands is quite costly…). I’m trying to get as much details as possible before attempting the design and build.. 🙂

    kind regards,
    Jan-Wijbrand Kolman

  4. If you look at the fuel system build up, you should see them fitted to the chassis – they had to be installed before the front tanks. They have a bracket that has a bolt hole for the bulkhead bottom bolt and brackets that line up with the other outriggers to use steel strips from outrigger to sill. Photos of their final appearance are all over the site as they have been fitted permanently since the start of the rebuild – the Alps trip diary should show some good pictures of how they look.
