The Defender reservoir bottle for the windscreen washers has split along its bottom seam. Â Why, I don’t know – it hasn’t been hit or exposed to anything other than mild temperatures. Â As a temporary repair, I removed the bottle, put it through the dishwasher and then sealed the split with a 1/2″ wide, 1/8″ thick bead of Tiger Seal PU adhesive (I used masking tape around the edges and pulled that off just after application of the Tiger Seal to give a neat finish). Â I have refit the system, but will wait until tomorrow to refill it as I want the adhesive to cure first. Â We’ll see how long it holds, but I suppose I’ll be looking for a replacement at Peterborough…

Nick, I had problems with the plastic bottles and caps splitting on my trucks. I wasn’t prepared to pay the silly money being asked for replacement Land Rover parts and was going to get a generic reservoir/pump from an online stockist but then spotted some stainless steel flasks for £1 in poundstretcher and thought I’d make up my own reservoir bottle as shown here:

It only has a 1 ltr capacity so wouldn’t be much use for you as you do high mileages but worth considering making your own solution up with a larger capacity rather than buy another plastic Land Rover one? Ours has been in there for a year now and works perfectly and looks more interesting than the plastic one and is far more robust. I have a friend who copied my idea and he too has had no problems with it either.
Regards, Ian
Actually make that nearly two years without issue – how time flies!
Good idea. The current bottle has integrated pumps. They just pull out for replacement, but I’d have to replace them with free standing pumps. I’ll keep my eyes open for a larger upgrade.
I hope the Tiger Seal worked it’s magic for you Nick. I did see a washer resevoir for sale at Billing, hopefully you can find one at Peterborough just in case it lets go again.
Regards,
Neil.
So far, so good, but it is only a temporary repair until I get a replacement.
