A recap through the various posts on the Lightweight show that I forgot to update the engine issues.
Ultimately, the poor running was due to incorrect ignition timing. The problem is in using the static timing figures listed in the various manuals – they’re for 2 Star and 4 Star leaded petrol, not modern unleaded. In the end, I set the timing by ear, adjusting the distributor position to find the peak idle rpm and then adjusting the carburettor. It has since run sweetly on the few runs it has done, with no back firing, poor performance or coughing. The engine even starts immediately having been left standing for weeks or even months. What a turn around!
Replacing all those components was irritating, especially the wasted carb and apparently unnecessary new ignition system, but I hope to change the latter back soon.
