Pioneer Tools and Cargo Rail

I used the standard Land Rover brackets for the shovel head and pick head (LR or Mantec), but used the pick head main mounting for a tailgate instead of a wing top.  The reson was the method of its attachment to the body work.  While a wing top mounting has bottom flanges that spread outward, each with three rivet holes, the tailgate version has flanges that are turned in underneath and one bolt hole at each end for an M8 or equivalent bolt.   By using stips of 3mm neoprene on the bottom of the flanges and rivnuts in the wingtop, the mounting is itself de-mountable, so is easily removed with little evidence when not required.  This means that not only will I not have a large, ugly bracket with a rust-prone stud permanently spoiling the aesthetics of the vehicle, but it’s also better for pedestrian safety (a fairly moot point with a bull bar and winch).

I used Quickfists for securing the shovel and pick handles, and omitted the handle end brackets because I thought that the Quickfists were easier to use, more secure, neater and, again, safer.

I have two more quick fists for securing the axe.  I had planned to it it above the rear door, but the roof rack’s additional supports prevent that.  If I do fit it, it’ll be internal, along the right hand side wheel arch.  If it does get mounted internally like that, I may also get the mounting for the head itself from Mantec.

I also have some new aluminium cargo rail and (so far) eight moveable lashing eyes for securing internal loads on trips.  Two of the 3′ lengths will be bolted to the lower corners of the wheel arches, just above the tub floor, while the other two lengths have been cut into sections for fitting along the outboard edges of the wheel arches, allowing boxes or bags to be secured in place of the folding seats (which can each be removed and refitted in about five seconds), while other loads can be secure to the floor with straps or netting between the two lower rails.

  1. Did you have to raise the closest quick fist to the shovel head mount for it to work on the handle

  2. Hi Troy,

The pioneer tools don’t use the entire tool mounting kit as I didn’t want the sharp brackets at the end of the shovel and pick handles and they weren’t needed with the more secure grip the Quickfists have compared to the canvas straps of the standard mounts. The shovel head is secured by the standard bracket and a rubber pad to stop bonnet damage, while the handle is only secured at the opposite end by the one Quickfist; the one nearer the head is too low to grip the shaft, but it doesn’t matter as the other one holds it very securely. I’d already bought the four, not thinking about the exact shape of the shovel, but I do like the symmetry of the four clamps.
