Chassis Goes Black

black chassisThe rear cross-member has been etch primed and sprayed with matt black enamel. It looks really smooth and high quality. the rest has been painted with Hammerite Underbody Seal (brushable Schutz), which is a mixture of Waxoil and bitumen. It doesn’t look great, but I prefer it to a bare galvanised chassis, and it offers more protection.

The galvanized chassis has got its good points but it still has its bad points as well. If you use it off road and the chassis gets scagged on rocks and things that will start to rust when weathered. When you get a Gally chassis all the bolt holes need drilled and if you have to adapt a chassis the gally coating gets taken off.
If you use a good coat of paint to protect your chassis, this does make things easier for any damage to the chassis.
The project I’m working on will have the chassis totally restored and modified before I start the paint work, I’ll be using (RUSTINS) Aluminium paint and putting several coats on this paint is heat and rust proof and I’ve used it on several trailers and other projects, its worked wonders and it looks realy clean and smart.
The alloy paint does need stirred up at regular intervals if you use a paint brush or if spray on it needs the spray pot shaken to keep the paint mixed up because of its sediment content keeps separating. I don’t mind this as the finish and results are realy good.
I you go on Rustins web site they will give you your closest stockest as not all shops sell it, the web site is http://www.rustins.co.uk
